BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Oxaliplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy drug in the same family as cisplatin and carboplatin. It is typically administered for the treatment of colorectal cancer. Compared to cisplatin the two ammine groups are replaced by cyclohexyldiamine for improved antitumour activity. The chlorine ligands are replaced by the oxalato bidentate derived from oxalic acid in order to improve water solubility.
CLINICAL USE
It is used to treat patients who have undergone surgery for colorectal cancer.
It is used for treatment of advanced carcinoma of the colon or rectum.
Oxaliplatin is also used to treat late-stage ovarian cancer.
MODE OF ACTION
Third generation platinum with a 1, 2-diaminocylohexane carrier ligand which forms DNA adducts and resultant strand breaks. Only platinum with activity in colorectal cancer.
