BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Dobutamine is a sympathomimetic amine which has strong stimulating effect on cardiac beta-1, receptor and a weak effect on beta-2 and alpha-1 receptors. Dobutamine is suitable for short term ionotropic support of the heart in patients with insufficient cardiac output and high left ventricular filling pressure but only slightly or monotherapy of severe hypotention or shock requiring vasopressor effect.

CLINICAL USE

Use for ionotropic support in the short term treatment of adults with cardiac decompention due to depressed contracttility resulting either organic heart disease or for cardiac surgical procedure.
